Special Notes: While the producers are interested in seeking African-American talent for the roles of the Montagues, including Romeo, ALL ethnicities (including Caucasion) are encouraged to submit!
(This R&J will be set in late 1800’s New Orleans and persons of color are encouraged to audition)
ESCALUS: (35-55) The most powerful politico of the city. He isn’t exclusively an authoritarian voice. He grieves deeply over Mercutio’s death. But he lacks foresight and cunning. He cannot find a solution to end the feud.
LORD MONTAGUE:(50- 60) African-American preferred. The oldest member of the families. Doesn’t quite understand how to communicate with his poetic, moody son. Some false bravado.
LADY MONTAGUE: (40-55) African-American preferred. Is so concerned about the well being of her husband, she loses focus of the needs of her son. This crystallizes when she dies of grief over her son’s banishment.
ROMEO: (18-30) African-American preferred. A handsome, charismatic, sexually charged teenager who is in love with the ideal of love. Probably the wittiest of all his friends. Knows how to use a sword. The type of guy you would wish was your friend, and who under different circumstances a father would want his daughter to marry.
BENVOLIO: (20-30) Romeo’s contemporary and confidant who wants to avoid confrontation if possible. As passionate and sexually charged as Romeo.
LORD CAPULET: (35-55) Adores his only child and wants to do right by her, but has a temper and sometimes acts without considering the long term consequences of his actions. Understands the political and financial implications of marriage. Never unaware of the social implications of his family’s actions. A man of position with armor around his tender heart.
LADY CAPULET: (30-40) Needs one of the widest emotional ranges in the play. From the pomp of the party to the grief of Tybalt’s death. From the madness of revenge to the manipulation of a daughter’s love. And she young and beautiful to boot.
TYBALT: (20-30) As you would expect, fiery and passionate to the point of being irrational, and an expert swordsman. Charm permeates the cockiness.
APOTHECARY: (35-45) A creole voodoo priestess who carries all the chorus lines, as well as her own. Appears throughout the play. Some dance movement required.
FRIAR LAURENCE: (50-65) A good hearted, absent-minded, not very brave individual who loves to tinker with his herbal concoctions. Happily shares his insights about life with anyone who will listen. Genuinely cares for Romeo. fcc
