Casting: Two Male Actors for World Premiere Play “The Twentieth-Century Way” (Pasadena, CA)

“The Twentieth-Century Way”
World premiere by Tom Jacobson
Directed by Michael Michetti
Produced by The Theatre @ Boston Court in Pasadena

OPEN CALL AUDITION MONDAY, FEBRUARY 22 (more details below)
Rehearsals begin 3/23, previews starting 4/29, opening 5/8 and running through 6/6, with a possible extension through 6/20

Based on a little-known incident in LA history, this theatrical thrill ride explores the collision of reality and fantasy as two actors juggle various roles to entrap homosexuals for “social vagrancy” in the public restrooms of 1914 Long Beach. But are they actually entrapping each other? Who they are and what they need is a mystery that deepens with every twist and turn.

WARREN – Male, 20’s-30’s, ruggedly handsome, cocky and masculine, with a Brooklyn accent which he can eradicate with ease. He is an actor who favors an “outside in” method of acting which emphasizes finding the character through the external techniques of gestures, accents and vocal inflection, etc. (but he applies the techniques artfully, without conspicuous theatricality or hamminess). Smart and a crafty manipulator, he engages Brown in a dangerous game of deceit and is surprised to find that Brown is a worthy and challenging opponent. Requires a dynamic actor, highly skilled at playing multiple characters with diverse ages, genders, physicality and dialects. NUDITY REQUIRED.
Also plays many other characters including: Herbert Lowe, a florist from Minnesota, a gentle and dignified gay man, sensitive and with strong self-esteem; Charles Kenny McClatchey, the crusty and salacious editor of the Sacramento Bee; L.L. Rollins, a gay party boy, flighty, flirtatious and prone to gossip; Mrs. Charles P. M’Hugh, a prudish, straitlaced housewife; and others

BROWN – Male, 20’s, pretty, sensitive and introspective but masculine, with a slight Chicago accent. He is an actor who favors the Stanislavski method of natural and emotionally honest acting, found through internal examination. A bit naïve, but very intelligent and not without his own wiles, he finds himself embroiled in a dangerous game of deceit and manipulation, and becomes determined to beat Warren at his own game. Requires a dynamic actor, highly skilled at playing multiple characters with diverse ages, physicality and dialects. NUDITY REQUIRED.
Also plays many other characters including: John Lamb, 46, Scottish druggist, a kind and respectable, cautious and closeted gay man, and a leader in his church; Eugene Fisher, an eager and ambitious reporter for the Sacramento Bee; Charles Sebastian, Los Angeles’ gruff and authoritative Police Chief; Six Different Guests at a private party for gay men, of various ages, ethnicities, dialects, etc.; and others

(Also seeking understudies for both roles)
