The Racine Theatre Guild, 2519 Northwestern Ave., will hold open auditions at 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 2-3, for “The Giver,” a play based on the book by Lois Lowry that became a major motion picture in 2014.

Jonas lives in a regulated, safe society that has eliminated war, pain and everything else that might cause dissension, like emotions, color and choice. Everyone is assigned a role at age 12. Jonas is selected to succeed the Giver, the person who retains memories of the community before “Sameness.” As Jonas gains knowledge, he sees the hypocrisy of his utopian world. Will he take control of his own destiny?

Cast: Various ages, 10 & up, males & females

8 Performances: April 10 – 19, 2015
Plus 4 weekday school performances
Director: Norman McPhee

There are roles for two boys and a girl who appear to be age 12. A younger girl (minimum age 10) is needed to play Jonas’s sister. The adult roles are Jonas’ father and mother, The Chief Elder (man or woman, middle-aged or older) and The Giver (an older man). Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Scripts are available to check out in advance from the box office.
