Three African-American Male Actors Needed (Nicholasville, KY)

Casting for BLOW YE THE TRUMPET, BLOW! by Donna R. Phillips & Georgana Riddell. Blow Ye the
Trumpets, Blow! is a docudrama commissioned through a grant from the Kentucky Arts Council and sponsored by the Jessamine County Fiscal Court in partnership with the Bluegrass Arts Association. This production is based on a deposition given by Private Joseph Miller, a Union soldier serving with U.S. Colored Infantry at Camp Nelson. Private Miller and his family are interred at Camp Nelson.
The cast is predominantly African American. Rehearsals begin March 27, 2010. A complete script and character descriptions will be provided upon request.

We are looking to cast the following roles:

Sammy Jones: (Bass Baritone Soloist, Age: Late 40’s early 50’s. Runaway slave, Escaped in the middle of the night but was caught by the night watchman. After he was returned to his master’s house, Sammy escaped again to join the Union Army at Camp Nelson Sammy has a great sense of humor and finds levity and hope even in every situation.) Younger actors who can be aged with stage makeup will be considered.

Billy Bishop: (Tenor Soloist, Age: Early 20’s. Billy admits he was treated pretty well by his ‘boss’. But that didn’t stop him from running to join the Union Army. Billy is somewhat awkward and has trouble getting the drill maneuvers right. As a result, he is singled out by Captain Sonny Hayes. Billy is also in love with Maria Miller.) Actor can be a few years younger or older than the character as long as they can pass for early 20’s.

Calvin Miller: (Age: 9. Calvin is fun loving, spirited and precocious. He loves to pretend he is a soldier like his father. It is Calvin who inspires Patsy Leach to begin sharing her harrowing escape from slavery and to talk about the children she had to leave behind. Calvin excels at reading in John Fee’s school. Because warm clothing and blankets are in short supply, Calvin falls ill. As a result, he is unable to survive the elements when he, his mother and siblings are expelled from the camp on a cold winter morning.) Older actors who look young will be considered.
