OPEN AUDITION for “The Amazing Dickie”
OPEN AUDITION for “The Amazing Dickie”, an original full length stage play written by Tara McMillen. It is about a family coping with issues surrounding homosexuality, embarrassing family ancestry, and alcoholism. It is a dark comedy, playing over three days while the Bergess family prepares for their family reunion. Sixteen year old Steve, victim of a gay bashing by high school boys, tries to come out to his family, but keeps getting upstaged by his confrontational older sister, Casey, his equally confrontational mother, Bonnie and his flamboyant Uncle Dickie.

Non-Union theater. Pays $25 stipend. Rehearsals on weekends and possibly one weekday. Rehearsals begin April 5, 2008. Performances are June 25-28, 2008 at Capital Hill Arts Center on Seattle’s Capitol Hill.

Character Breakdown:
Steve: 18-25 yrs old, able to take dance direction. Steve is the 16 year old son. He is flamboyant, gets beat up, and kisses Kyle. He’s a mama’s boy who writes stories, loves karaoke, and listens to easy tunes and techno.
Casey: 20-24 yrs old, able to take dance direction. Must have loud voice and be comfortable kissing another woman. Casey is the oldest daughter. She is feminine with butch tendencies. She’s loud, confrontational, stubborn and loves to cause trouble. Body jewelry a plus.
Bonnie: 40-50 yrs old. Must have loud voice. Bonnie is the mother with a sophisticated, upper class attitude. She longs to fit in with high society but feels held back by the crassness of her family.
Dickie: 50-60 yrs old. Able to take dance direction. Must be comfortable wearing a drag outfit for one scene. Dickie is Bonnie’s uncle. He is loud, unkempt, a little on edge, and an alcoholic.
Cort: 40-50 yrs old. Cort is the father. He’s a sweater-type guy, clean cut, closet bi-sexual. He spends a lot of time in the garage drinking whiskey and looking at gay porn magazines.
Kyle: 18-25 yrs old. Looking for a pretty boy jock. Kyle kisses Steve. He is violent, one of the boys who beats up Steve, a closet sensitive guy, and self-motivated.
Jennifer: 15-18 yrs old. Jennifer is the youngest daughter who, as Bonnie says, “insists on dressing like a boy so might as well be gay”. She is 12 years old, a tomboy, and likes to read and play video games.
Dana: 20-24 yrs old. Must be comfortable kissing another woman. Dana is Casey’s girlfriend. She is laid back and sociable. She has a wild side that she tames for meeting Casey’s parents.
Nancy: 40-50 yrs old. Nancy is Bonnie’s friend. She is loud and loveable, helps corral the kids and gossips with Bonnie.
Julius: 50-60 yrs old. Julius is Dickie’s cousin. He is pompous, arrogant, outspoken, and smokes a pipe. His hair went completely gray at age 45 and he has died it black ever since. Julius wears Italian suits and cheap cologne. He has been father to several bastard children.
