L. Cast & Plot Summary
1965 Charlotte, N.C.
Paul, often sullen and angry, is the reluctant manager of his family’s club, the Excelsior, formally run by absentee father George. He is the middle son of loving, but secretive and controlling church pillar Vida Mae. Oscar, the oldest child and father of Roy, runs Cuttin’ Heads, the barber shop across the street and is openly resentful of Paul, the dependable one. Paul has no problems returning the animosity. Juliette (Jewel), the highly intelligent baby sister, attends Harvard-Radcliffe University and is the sole “hope” for the community and the church that is paying for her education. Roy is autistic, and intelligent, a militant, budding Black Panther (the organization does not yet exist) who secretly yearns for the return of his militant mother who ran out when he was a child. Other cast members: Reverend Watts: church leader and Civil Rights Organizer. Nelson, militant, Cuttin’ Heads mainstay. Lillian: Highly intelligent sociologist and estranged friend of Paul’s.

When Leon, the headliner and famous pianist for the Excelsior dies, the troubles of the family come to a head as the bar is in danger of going under and all the family’s problems and secrets come to light. Social backdrop to the play is the divisiveness in the African-American community over the Civil Rights movement, especially the Swann bussing case. All characters are open to casting.

M. What to Bring
Headshot and resume useful but not essential. Auditions are by monologue or reading from material the actor brings. You may be asked to cold read from script. Accents are middle to lower class Black-southern (this is more important than ethnicity), except for Lilly who can be anything but. Although dealing with serious family issues, the play is rife with humor, sometimes caustic and biting.
