KAFKA ON THE SHORE
By Haruki Murakami
Adapted and Directed by Frank Galati
PLEASE SUBMIT ACTORS OF ASIAN DESCENT FOR:
KAFKA: Plays approximately 16 (would ideally like older to play younger). Kafka has a very keen intelligence and a deep curiosity about literature and history. He’s not a punk and shouldn’t be easily sized up by the audience as just another “shooter.” Kafka has an imperturbable surface and may be scary. He is someone who has exploded into violence, but that scares him too. The kid is deep. Kafka’s “passivity” is exciting somehow and draws us in. The older female lead, Miss Saeki, is utterly smitten because there is immense sexual charm, a kind of steam, coming off of him - - a sense of his muscles moving under his shirt in an unselfconscious way. His penetrating eyes seek knowledge, but are also all-knowing. Think of those young people: brilliant, seductive, uncanny, dangerous. Some push over into the pathological, some destroy themselves and others become artists. This is Murakami’s “Oedipus”, but it’s also his “Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.”
PLEASE SUBMIT BY MAIL OR EMAIL TO ERICA DANIELS, CASTING DIRECTOR, ASAP. PLEASE MARK ENVELOPE KAFKA. DON’T HESITATE TO CALL WITH ANY QUESTIONS:
