Open Auditions NYC: Seeking actors for a musical

Romantic Poetry – Equity Principal Auditions
Manhattan Theatre Club LORT $750/week minimum.
Book/Lyrics/ Stage Director: John Patrick Shanley

Six-person musical about the romantic, passionate and sometimes downright turbulent lives and loves of a group of John Patrick Shanley New Yorkers.

Seeking:
Fred / Cop: Double role, mid 30s - mid 40s. A native New Yorker, leading man type. Fred: Our narrator. Newly married to Connie…and already thinking about an annulment. Quick-tempered, superstitious, literal – but straightforward with his love. To him, loving and fighting are two sides of the same coin. Cop: NYPD. Nice guy on his beat. Loves people, but doesn’t love being a cop. Friendly, easy-going. fcc

Carl / Jilly Brilla: Double role, 50s. Character man. Quirky and a bit slippery. Carl: Connie’s second husband. A lawyer. Jovial, but untrustworthy. Cheerfully manipulative. Fancies himself a ladies’ man. Jilly Brilla: Eastern European. A bartender and a romantic. His profession and his loneliness frequently lead him to get involved in the conversations of strangers. A bit odd. Opinionated – and vocal about it. Old-world manners with a New York edge.

Connie / Judy: Double role, mid 30s - mid 40s. Sexy, tough, great voice. A leading lady in the Shanley mode. Connie: A newlywed…for the third time. Long Islander. Combative, erratic and exasperating – but there’s something about her that makes men fall hard. Maybe because she passionately believes in love, despite all lessons to the contrary. Judy: Bored and self-medicating in the suburbs. Walked away from a big, deep, messy love affair with Arthur, and settled down with a rich man she doesn’t love. Lonely and yearning, but more comfortable than she was living with constant uncertainty. If she’s defensive, it’s because it was hard enough to walk away once. High belt/mix to an E.

Frankie / Wally: Double role, 30s - 40s. Working-class guy; open and kind. Big, legit/operatic baritone that can go high – to an F. There should be something outsized about these characters – strapping physique or big presence. Frankie: Long Island caterer. Chases an unpaid wedding bill to the Poconos, and finds instant love. Passionate and funny. Does everything with conviction. Uncomplicated. Wally: Deli man who has put his dreams of being an opera singer on the shelf. Rueful, practical, fearful. Craves security, and the price for that security is giving up Lily. His decision is made, but the hole it has left in his heart is palpable. Smart and artistic, but unadventurous.

Red / Arthur: Double role, 40s. Masculine and charming; a guy’s guy. Comic chops more important than vocal chops (although both would be nice). Baritone, limited range, tops out at E. Red: Connie’s first ex-husband. Has gotten a handle on his anger management problem by learning to take the high road…for now. Still loves Connie. Holds a grudge. Tightly-wound and aggressive, but easily cowed and genuinely apologetic. A sad man. Arthur: A poet and a romantic. Lives by the seat of his pants, and never knows where he’s going to sleep that night – but he’s awake to whatever magic life offers up. Passionately in love with Judy. Charming and persuasive, but unyielding and unreliable. He’ll never be a family man.

Mary / Lily: Double role, 22 – 28, African American. Sexy, funny and fearless. Great voice and acting/comic chops. Mary: Assistant Manager in charge of honeymoons at a hotel in the Poconos. Perky and romantic. Falls instantly and passionately in love with Frankie. Lily: Big-hearted painter who believes in love, and art, and boundless possibility. In love with Wally and unwilling to take a “no” from him for an answer. Driven, certain and more than a little wild.
