Seeking: (Note: In addition to understudies, also seeking possible future replacements for all roles listed below)
Trigorin Understudy: One man to understudy one role:
Trigorin: Late 30s. Arkadina’s lover. He is an esteemed but obsessive writer. Tempted by the
youth and beauty of Nina.
Arkadina / Polina Understudy: One woman to understudy both roles:
Irina Arkadina: Early 40s. A famous actress. Konstantin’s mother. Beautiful, proud, stubborn and selfish. Constantly seeks the center of attention. Obsessed with appearing youthful. Has taken Trigorin as a lover.
Polina Andreyevna: Late 40s. Masha’s mother. Trapped in a loveless marriage. In love with Dorn, but irritated by the lack of affection he shows her in return. Polina is often embarrassed by her husband, Shamrayev.
Masha / Nina Understudy: One woman to understudy both roles:
Masha: 20s. In love with Konstantin. Deeply depressed. Heavy drinker and snuff addict. She is critical and unsympathetic, but also has deep intellect and wit. Marries Medvedenko, but still yearns for Konstantin.
Nina Zarechnaya: 20s. In love with Konstantin, or at least the idea of what he could offer her. An aspiring actress who holds Arkadina in the highest esteem. Hopeless romantic with an ambitious streak.
Sorin / Shamrayev / Dorn Understudy: One man to understudy all three roles:
Pyotr Nikolayevich Sorin: Late 50s. Arkadina’s brother, and owner of the estate. Patient and compassionate man. His health deteriorates throughout the course of the play.
Ilya Afanasyevich Shamrayev: Late 40s. Masha’s father. Acting manager of the farm and estate. He is often cruel and unsympathetic to his wife and daughter, but is full of admiration and flattery for the great Arkadina.
Dorn: 50s. Local, well-respected doctor. A compassionate man who often tries to soften Arkadina’s attacks on her son, Konstantin.
Treplev / Medvedenko / Yakov Understudy: One man to understudy all three roles:
Konstantin Treplev: Mid 20s. Arkadina’s only son. A writer searching to find his own voice. Constantly struggling with his need for approval, success and love. Full of impatience and self-doubt.
Semyon Semyonovich Medvedenko: Late 20s. Local schoolteacher, in love with Masha. He is poor, and often complaining about his position. Pursues Masha, although he knows she does not truly love him.
Yakov: 30s. Hired workman.
