On the Square Productions presents American Idiot, conceived by Deborah Wolfson. This dramatic piece combines Shakespeare’ s Measure for Measure with text from political essayist Naomi Wolf. American Idiot will be participating in The Planet Connections Festival – the first green theatre festival in the United States. The festival will take place throughout the month of June at the Linhart Theatre at 440 Studios.
Duke Vincentio â€“ 30s- Duke of Vienna, a leader both lax and Machiavellian until he sees the ramifications of his decisions
Angelo â€“ 20s- Rigid and moralistic until corrupted by power
Isabella â€“ 20s- Fiercely righteous and seen as cold, struggling to maintain herself in the face of personal tragedy and a political powder keg
Marianna- 20s â€“ Angeloâ€™s jilted fiancÃ©, who carries a torch for him for five years
Provost- 30s (female) â€“ Viennaâ€™s jailer, committed to justice and risking her job to what is right
Escalus- 35-45 (male or female)- Wise, judicious, and not listened to nearly enough
Mistress Overdone- 20s/30s- The local madamâ€”sexy, smart, and funny
Pompey- 20s- Male prostitute, acerbic and witty
Friar Thomas- 30s- Kind, knows when to ask questions and when be silent
Lucio â€“ 20s â€“ Disillusioned, well meaning but loyal only when it suits
Claudio- 20s- Earnest and intelligent victim of the times
Auditions will be held Saturday, March 28th at Shetler Studios (244 W. 54th St.) from 1-6pm. Sides will be provided for you- both Shakespearean and from Wolf’s text.
