HENRY (40-55, caucasian) – A quiet man, very matter of fact. An on-again off-again soldier. An artillery man to be precise. Never had a desire to be lifelong soldier, but feels a call to civic duty. He re-enlists when there is a major conflict, does his time, and goes home. Fought as a younger man in the Mexican-American war. Recently came home from fighting in the American Civil War, siding with his home state of Virginia. He sees who he is as a soldier and who he is as an everyday human being as two separate identities and prefers to keep it that way. Discussing the war, or any battle, is a subject he shies from. He sees in Jeremiah many of the same problems he grappled with as a younger man and their bond is forged through the mutual experience they shared – that of war, whichever side one happened to be on. He is a racist by modern day standards, but his reasons for fighting in the war had nothing to do with slavery. He was fighting for his home. He now goes a bit over the top in defending his own private property and land, and has a bit of an eye for revenge against former slaves particularly. That said, he is a good man who was raised in a completely different time. He enjoys the simple things in life, like biscuits, long walks through the woods, and tobacco.
