Portrait And A Dream
by Jacob Marx Rice

Directed by Katie Lupica
Produced by Diana Levy

“Portrait And A Dream” is a darkly comic memory play in which three young people navigate love, friendship, and the end of the world. Nick and Annie find romance on a park bench. Annie and Paige met in 10th grade English. Nick and Paige met at brunch. Two years later, Nick’s world ends seemingly without warning. Yet, to Nick’s surprise and distress, his life continues to move inevitably forward.

“Portrait And A Dream” follows Nick, Annie, and Paige as they live in Nick’s memories – which occur, and sometimes reoccur, out of order, coalescing into a single poignant portrait of life and loss. While Nick has no more control over these memories than the other characters, the story follows his attempt to wrangle some meaning from his relationships, actions, and persistent survival.

NICK (20s)
Good-looking and intelligent. Able to play off his occasional awkwardness as charming. He comes off as self-assured by hiding his real issues and frequently needs confirmation of his value to others. It is his memories we see.

ANNIE (20s)
Brilliant, beautiful, composed, and direct. She does not allow herself to be anything less than dominant, but when she is comfortable she can be charming and sweet. She and Nick start dating over the course of the play.

PAIGE (20s)
Very smart, well read, and inexperienced with putting her own wants before others. She is not as beautiful as Annie and is almost never certain, but there is something about her and she reveals a soft strength when pushed far enough. She and Annie have been best friends since high school.
