Casting / Audition Details:
The Beautiful Soup Theater Collective is proud to announce their Winter, 2011 theatrical event. Running in repertory, audiences are invited to join us to explore Nora Helmer, the complex and brazen young woman who slammed a door in Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House and changed the world in 1879. In NORA, in rep, Beautiful Soup presents a classic look at Ibsen’s play and a new look at the famed Broadway 1982 flop, A Doll’s Life, which is a sequel of sorts.

B.S.T.C is a not-for-profit off-off-Broadway and non-Equity theater company specializing in new looks at classic works. Proceeds from the box offices of our productions are donated to a charity whose mission matches the themes of the play or musical being presented. Proceeds from NORA, in rep will be donated to SANCTUARY FOR FAMILIES, the leading not-for-profit agency in New York State for victims of domestic violence and sex trafficking. by Henrik Ibsen and directed by Cristina Carrion

Nora Helmer has a delicious secret that saved her husband’s life, but if he finds out what she’s done, it might destroy their marriage. Blackmail and innocence, love and hypocrisy collide in one of the most celebrated plays in theater history. A Doll’s House was the first successful play of its era to affirm a married woman’s right to her own individuality. It remains one of the most controversial plays about love and marriage ever written, and still retains the power to shock an audience a century after its lead character opened a door to freedom.

The role of Nora Helmer is CAST. ALL OTHER ROLES ARE OPEN.

Torvald Helmer (30s-40s), Nora’s patronizing and authoritative husband. A banker who is overly concerned with his status in society.

Nils Krogstad (30s), a colleague of Torvald’s. A conniving lawyer who is not afraid to watch Nora suffer so his own schemes can succeed.

Mrs. Linde (30s), Nora’s childhood friend. A practical, down-to-earth woman, and her sensible worldview highlights Nora’s childlike outlook on life.

Dr. Rank (45+), Torvald’s best friend. A dying man who is largely unconcerned with what others thinks of him. Stoic.

Anne-Marie (20s), the Helmers’ doting nanny who has a genuine affection for Nora.

Servant (20s-30s), male or female, also operates and voices marionette puppets (which appear in the play as the Helmer children). Marionette experience a plus!

WHAT TO PREPARE FOR “A DOLL’S HOUSE” AUDITION: a 1-2 minute dramatic monologue from an early modern play (Ibsen, Chekhov, Shaw, Gogol).

To schedule your audition (or submit for a technical position), submit a headshot and resume through electronic submission stating the SHOW(S) AND ROLE(S) YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE CONSIDERED FOR.
