Casting Call Details:
This is for a 30-minute non-union thesis called Queens for Brooklyn College MFA graduate student Nate Millado. The piece will broadcast on Time Warner Cable Channel 75 in early 2013.

The central setting is a fictitious drag bar in Woodside called “Damas y Caballeros” (“Ladies and Gentlemen”), or DyCs (pronounced “Dick’s”) for short. Each week, viewers not only see the queens’ backstage banter and campy performances but also dramatically compelling personal stories that ground this larger-than-life ensemble. This thesis production will serve as the pilot.

Casting Call Information:
There will be a casting call on Saturday, January 21, 2012, at “Space On White Studio” in Lower Manhattan at 81 White Street from 10:00AM – 4:00PM.

All auditions will be scheduled appointments. Please contact ROB- Casting Director- with your headshot and resume and a time preference and we will schedule a time that is convenient for you.

Character Breakdowns:

[REAL-LIFE DRAG PERFORMERS WITH AN ACTING BACKGROUND ARE ENCOURAGED TO AUDITION FOR THE FOLLOWING ROLES]

• Virginia Slim (Dick), a “plus-sized personality” in every way. Virginia is the drag mother and owner of the drag dive bar, Damas y Caballeros. At home, Dick tends to his longtime partner, Carl, who is living with HIV. Despite Carl’s status, they are the series’ heart and soul.
(Any ethnicity; late 30s to early 50s. Needed for 3 days.)

• Lexus Carrington (Alex). A perfectionist performer, Lexus always prides herself in giving a show-stopping performance. Although she may seem manipulative at work, at home Alex is a single parent who would do anything for his young son, Manny. By day, he works in construction.
(Hispanic; 20s. Needed for 3 days.)

• Princessa (Quezon), the scene-stealing Filipino teen queen. By day, Quezon is a certified nurses’ aide who works at DyCs to help pay for tuition at Queensborough Community College in Nursing. Quezon wrestles with coming out to his conservative, Catholic mom. His best friend is his sister, Jollibea, who is the only one in his family who knows he’s gay.
(Asian; late teens to 20s. Needed for 3 days.)

• Diamant, a pre-op transsexual saving up tips for sexual reassignment surgery. Although she had always thought surgery would make her feel more complete, Diamant is having second thoughts about going through with the transformation.
(Any ethnicity; Needed for 2 days.)

[NON-DRAG ROLES]

• Carl, Dick’s longtime partner living with HIV. If Virginia is the resident drag mother to the other girls, then Carl is the father figure to the younger queens. He would do anything for his partner, Dick.
(Any ethnicity; late 30s to early 50s; bald or little hair preferred. Needed for 2 days.)

• Joliibea, Quezon’s sister and best friend. Whereas her brother is Mama’s boy, she is more of the conservative family’s wild child and urges her brother to come out.
(Asian; late teens to 20s. Needed for 1 to 2 days.)

• Manny, Alex’s precocious young son. He’s been struggling at school, but single dad Alex has been too busy juggling his construction and drag jobs to notice. (Hispanic; 8-12 years old. Needed for 1 day.)

• Luz, Quezon and Jollibea’s Filipino mother. She’s a conservative Catholic who goes to church every day who loves her son, Quezon, even though he seems to have under-achieved in her eyes. She probably has an inkling her son is gay but would never acknowledge it.
(Asian; late 40s to 50s. Needed for 1 day.)

• Santos, Alex’s foreman at the construction site. Although he seems very alpha at work, the married father lives a secret life.
(Any ethnicity; 20s to 30s. Needed for 1.5 days.)

• Abuela, Alex’s mom who watches over Manny while he works at the club. Fluency in Spanish preferred.
(Hispanic; late 40s to 60s. Needed for 1 day.)

• Celia, a family friend of Luz, Quezon and Jollibea. She runs into them after mass and doesn’t hesitate to play up her perfect life.
(Asian; late 30s to 50s.)

[THESE PARTS DON’T REQUIRE AN AUDITION. HEAD SHOT AND RESUME WOULD SUFFICE]

• Bartender, DyC’s muscle-bound mixologist (Any ethnicity; muscular; 20s.)

• Jose, a twink patron at DyC’s. (Any ethnicity; skinny; teens to 20s.)

• Man, friend of the landlord’s who delivers eviction notice to Virginia and the queens (Any ethnicity; pudgy preferred; 20s to 30s.)

• Latin Dancers, looking for a couple that does salsa, meringue, or any other Latin dancing. (Any ethnicity; any age.)

• Landlord (Any ethnicity; any age.)

• Potential Tenant (Any ethnicity; any age.)

• Bad Karaoke Singer (Asian; 30s to 50s.)
