CubeCity Entertainment, Inc. is casting for the SAG digital feature “Under
Jakob’s Ladder.”
SAG Ultra Low Budget Contract.
Synopsis: This feature film, UNDER JAKOB’S LADDER, presents a memorable
script set in a Soviet Prison Camp. The theme of the script is somewhat
reminiscent of Roberto Benigni’s LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL. It presents a story that
moves from despair to a realistic and believable optimism.

Seeking:

BRUNO – Lead. MALE. 35-45. White. Required Skills – Dialects: Slavic.
Eastern European. Helpful Skills – Good singing voice. Lean, tough-looking
Communist. Bitter atheist. Because he’s the “inside man” at the prison, he
gets special treatment from the guards. Boastful. Likes to push his weight
around. A good singer.

YASHA – Lead. MALE. 20-25. 5′ 8″ – 5′ 11″. White. Required Skills -
Dialects: Slavic. Eastern European. Helpful Skills – Convincingly tone-deaf,
realistic ability to stage a seizure. Simple-minded (brain-damaged) ,
devoted. forgiving, undaunted by life. A source of amusement for the other
prisoners in that he rarely “gets it”.

KARL – Lead. MALE. 20-25. 5′ 9″ – 5′ 11″. White. Required Skills – Dialects:
Slavic. Eastern European. Helpful Skills – fair singing voice. Quiet and
introverted. Prison life has turned his outlook into a bitter, sarcastic
anger. He desires to turn matters right and struggles with the purpose of
being in jail when he committed no crime.

VOVIK – Supporting. MALE. 40-50. White. Required Skills – Dialects: Slavic.
Eastern European. Helpful Skills – Overweight Outspoken and “fat” wise-guy.
Rash. Is using a spoon to try to dig his way out of prison.

YOSIF – Supporting. MALE. 40-50. 6′ 4″ – 7′ 0″. White. Required Skills -
Dialects: Slavic. Eastern European. Helpful Skills – Tall. Extremely tall.
Intimidating big man, known for his imposing size. Even the prison bully,
Bruno, doesn’t want to cross him. A protector of the weaker prisoners.

DAVID – Supporting. MALE. 50-60. White. Required Skills – Dialects: German.
A Mennonite preacher who has managed to gather scraps of paper to create a
“bible”. Courageous. Defiant. Shot to death.

OIGEN – Supporting. MALE. 40-50. White. Required Skills – Dialects: Slavic.
Eastern European. Slimy. Backstabbing. Turns in his friends and neighbors in
return for bottles of vodka. Cowardly. A drunk.

PEPCHIK – Supporting. MALE. 40-60. White. Required Skills – Dialects:
Slavic. Eastern European “Toothless” mute inmate, scrawls cryptic and
foreboding messages on the prison walls; behind his eccentric façade lies a
deeply thoughtful interior. He speaks at the very end of the story to the
astonishment of all.

HANS – Supporting. MALE. 30-40. White. Required Skills – Dialects: German.
Helpful Skills – Ability to convey extreme emotions on a dime. Intense
Mennonite, ready to challenge those who oppose him. Separated from his wife
and thrown into prison he is left discouraged and on the brink of insanity.

SERZHANT – Featured. MALE. 35-45. White. Required Skills – Dialects:
Russian. Unlikable Russian Sergeant, Pushy and Vindictive.

YOUNG NIKOLAI – Cameo. MALE. 10-14. White. Helpful Skills – Dark Hair,
piercing dark eyes. Dark haired, piercing eyes, bright but wary teenager,
his life is haunted by witnessing the humiliation of a chess match his
father lost.
