Feeling helpless and indifferent in a superficial world, Veronika decides to commit suicide with an overdose of sleeping pills. She awakens in Villete, a mental hospital, and is told her suicide attempt has damaged her heart and she has only days to live. In this time she experiences things she has never allowed herself to feel and discovers that every second of her existence is a miracle.

Veronika’s father. He is a Slovenian immigrant is his 50’s, a little older looking from the wear and tear. He speaks with a discernible Slavic accent. He goes and visits Veronika at the hospital and tries to control his fear and anger behind a brave face but his emotions overwhelm him as he sees his daughter’s situation.
