Auditioning actors for Broadway Production “A View From The Bridge”

“A View From The Bridge” Equity Principal Auditions
Broadway/Production Contract $1,605/week minimum.

Tentative dates:

1st rehearsal: November 19, 2009. 1st preview: December 28, 2009. Closing: April 4, 2010.

Please prepare a brief monologue (from the play, if you wish). Actors auditioning for the Italian immigrant roles may audition using an Italian accent, if appropriate to the monologue.
Please bring picture and resume, stapled together.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:

BEATRICE
Italian American woman, 40s. Working class. Married to Eddie. Good wife and homemaker, strong, warm and practical. Uneducated yet smart. Wants her household to run smoothly and wants Eddie to be happy, but is aware that something may be wrong in her home. Good woman trying to protect her family and what is hers.

ALFIERI
50s – 70. Self-made man who grew up in Red Hook and became a lawyer. Thoughtful, good- humored and non-judgmental. Good and decent man who was once a member of this Italian working- class community.

RODOLFO
Italian immigrant man, 20s. “Fresh off the boat”. Young, blond and attractive. Dreamer, idealistic and naïve; has no idea that he is a threat to Eddie. Masculine yet vulnerable. Has a nice tenor voice.

MARCO
Italian immigrant man, early 30s. “Fresh off the boat.” Rodolpho’s older, protective brother. Square-built peasant of 32. Suspicious. Tender and quiet-voiced, but has an imposing physical presence. Loyal family man.

LOUIS AND MIKE
Italian American men, 30s – 50. Gruff, working-class longshoremen. Friends with Eddie. Pass the time with stories and jokes. Actors in these roles may understudy other characters.

MR. LIPARI
Italian man, 50s. Intense, stout, middle-aged butcher in Red Hook. Non-speaking role. Actor may understudy Alfieri.

MRS. LIPARI
Italian woman, 40s. Middle-aged wife of Mr. Lipari. Non-speaking role. Actor may understudy Beatrice.

TONY
Italian American man, 20s. Working-class longshoreman. Actor also plays “Submarine” #2, and may understudy another role.

FIRST IMMIGRATION OFFICER
30s – 50s. Tough, unwavering. Doing his job, which ultimately sends both Marco and Rodolpho back to Italy. Strong physical presence. Actor may understudy another role.

SECOND IMMIGRATION OFFICER
30s – 50s. Tough, unwavering. Just doing his job. Strong physical presence. Actor may understudy another role.

“SUBMARINE” #1
Italian immigrant man, 20s – 30s. Non-speaking. Actor may understudy another role.

OFFSTAGE MALE UNDERSTUDY
Covers Tony, the “Submarines” and the Immigration Officers.

CATHERINE UNDERSTUDY
Onstage role is CAST. Seeking Understudy only. Italian American female, late teens – early 20s. Beatrice’s niece. Attractive and naïve. Has a special relationship with Eddie.

EDDIE
Onstage role is CAST, and will likely be understudied by another member of the onstage cast. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible replacements, should any become necessary. Italian American man, 40s. Working-class longshoreman. Protective of his family, and especially of his niece Catherine.

CONCESSION: Equity has granted an auditions concession to the producer. Equity Members may request a copy of the concession’s full text from the Equity Auditions Department.
