Auditioning actors for a 2-day AEA Staged Reading

THE LADY STRANGE
AEA STAGED READING (APPROVAL PENDING)
PAY: $100 + some travel
Interview: October 23, Reading: December 1-8

This audition is for a 2-day AEA Staged Reading. We will consider actors that are called in to read for the full 4-week production that will take place in March/April 2009 at HERE Arts Center. This is an original adaptation of a Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem entitled ‘Christabel’ . The full production will run for 4-weeks on an AEA Mini or LOA contract in March/April 2009 at HERE Arts Center.

THE LADY STRANGE (working title) by Monika Bustamante is an adaptation of Samuel Coleridge’s poem ‘Christabel, ‘ which tells the story of a young woman whose life is transformed by the appearance of a fantastical stranger. In Bustamante’s retelling of the story, the medieval model of fairy tale (a helpless damsel in distress, a royal father as protector) is turned on its head, and feminine power, guilt, and redemption are viewed from all angles.

Seeking:

LEO
Male, 50s-60s. Christabel’s father. Open to all ethnicities. Leo is a man still traumatized by his wife’s death during childbirth many years ago. His deep love for his daughter often comes out in panicked resentment. He fears her abandoning him, but he also fears being forever responsible for her. He fantasizes about a transformative journey, but has become an alcoholic and rarely leaves the house. When Christabel invites a beautiful stranger into their home, Leo finds his vitality restored. Seeking an actor who can physically make the transition from a crabby, world-weary man to a youthful-minded man with newfound hope and vigor. Physically, we must sense that he was once strong and able-bodied but his addictions and fears have hobbled him. Seeking an actor with a very strong sense of language and poetry. Classical experience preferred but not required.

ENID
Female, Mid 20s-mid 30s. Open to all ethnicities. A stranger who happens upon Christabel in the forest. She begins the play physically weak and unsure, but feeds upon the situation she enters and Christabel’s youthful energy to regain her beauty and power. Her charisma can seduce both men and women, and she can manipulate any situation, even pitting father against daughter for her advantage. Seeking an actress who can start the play frail, even emaciated looking and then make the transition into seemingly healthy. Seeking an actress with a very strong sense of language and poetry. Classical experience preferred but not required.

Director: Elena Aaroz
Playwright: Monika Bustamante
