PLEASE NOTE: This play, W. Somerset Maugham’s 1926 comedy of manners,
requires actors with expert skills in Standard British Dialect (aka:
Received Pronunciation) , classical stage training and experience.

SEEKING-

CONSTANCE MIDDLETON: (age 36) The most brilliant woman in the room, always.
Beautiful, perfectly poised, witty wife and mother with the most perfect
marriage in London. When she learns of her husband’s infidelity, she puts
her unique design skills to use to gain her financial independence, and
ultimately her personal freedom. SEEKING NAME, WILL ABSOLUTELY CONSIDER
OTHERS.

MARTHA CULVER: (age 32) Bright, intelligent, headstrong younger sister to
Constance, who is eager to avenge her brother-in-law’ s infidelity.

BARBARA FAWCETT: (age 40) Very successful interior decorator (at a time when
respectable women weren’t in the business world) who employs Constance.
Stylish, wise and elegant.

MARIE LOUISE DURHAM: (late 20s) Vivacious, attractive, fun-loving young
woman who is both Constance’s closest friend, and her husband’s lover.

JOHN MIDDLETON: (40-45) Conservative, chauvinistic, highly successful
surgeon in the middle of a perfect life with the perfect wife (Constance)
and the perfect mistress (Marie Louise).

BERNARD KERSAL: (40-45) Handsome, debonaire man-of-the-world, who has
carried the torch for Constance for 15 years, and becomes her lover.

MORTIMER DURHAM: (40-50) The middle class husband to Marie Louise who
angrily bursts in to avenge his cuckoldry, with all the grace of a bull in a
china shop. Please submit range of types.

BENTLEY: (50-60) The perfect British butler.
