17th Century play- World Premiere by Award winning playwright. Copies of the play will be available on the day of the audition and call backs for actors to read.
The Lieutenant Nun is based on the memoirs by Catalina de Erauso a 17 Century woman who lived her life as a nobleman and served in the Spanish Army as a Lieutenant. She participated in the conquest of Chile and Peru and fought against the Indians. She later confessed to a priest the truth about her identity. She was blessed by the Pope and received her soldier’s pension from the King of Spain because she managed to keep her hymen intact which was a virtue. She became a legend in her own time and died in Vera Cruz at the age of 50. This play explores her daring and romantic life a la Moliere style. It’s a comedy/drama.

Seeking:

YOUNG CATALINA: To play a 14 year old Catalina de Erauso, novice in the convent of San Sebastian. Submit actresses that are in there 20’s but can play a teenager

CLARA: To play a 14 year old, a novice and friend of Catalina. Also, plays Countess de Agramonte. Submit actresses in their 20’s but can play a teenager.

COUNTESS DE AGRAMONTE: (Lead) in her twenties attractive in love with Don Guzman. Submit actresses that are in their 20’s but can play a teenager

SISTER ALIRI: 40s a nun who dislikes Catalina. Also, plays MOTHER SUPERIOR

DON GUZMAN: (Lead) Adult Catalina de Erauso dresses as a 17th Century nobleman, a lieutenant, a gambler and a transvestite a charmer with the ladies. Strong actress, good comedic timing. Physically fit must be able to carry a sword and do stage combat. Not taller than 5′-5′

INDIAN CHIEF: 30-40s Indian features. Also plays a PRIEST

CAPT. DE ERAUSO: (Supporting) 40s Catalina’s brother and friend. Also plays EL CID must know stage sword fighting not taller than 5′-8′

DONA INEZ: (Lead)30s attractive and in love with Don Guzman. Also, plays LADY MOONSHINE.

DONA MARIA: 30s half Spanish and half Indian a rich land owner, mother of Lady Moonshine. Also plays-ROCIO- Flamenco dancer (must dance Flamenco well)

FRANCISCA: 40s African American actress- servant/slave to Don Guzman- Comedy timing a must, wise woman and very loyal to Don Guzman

COUNT DE SANTA CRUZ: (Supporting) Late 50s very rich, controlling and uncle to Dona Inez.
