SYNOPSIS
The lives of Fathers and Sons are forever intertwined…
1969 – Vietnam – the sounds of the war are everywhere. Fighting side by side, Steven George and Eddie Adams couldn’t be more different. Steven is a little shy but a friendly guy, not really aggressive by nature. Nicknamed “Preacher Boy”, he finds that talking about life and the people back home helps him pass the time. To Eddie, making friends and chatting about home is a waste of time. If he thinks about life, then he might have to think about death, and that’s something he’s not prepared or willing to do. But as often happens in war, this unlikely brotherhood will cause both these men to face their greatest fears, and to ultimately decide what matters most.
1997 – Visalia – Growing up without a father, John Paul George has decided to put his questions regarding his father’s life and death in the Vietnam War to rest. After digging up some clues John, despite his persistent fiancé’s discouragements, sets out on a weekend getaway looking for answers. When John encounters Wayne Adams, this weekend getaway turns into a life changing road trip. In between getting arrested, picking up hitchhikers and avoiding fights (or not avoiding them as the case may be), these two men discover that despite their differences, they need each other to get the answers they’ve each been searching for their whole life.
Seeking:
STEVEN GEORGE: MALE, 22-30 years old, CAUCASIAN. Steven is clean cut and handsome, looking every bit the soldier with his standard military haircut. But Steven by nature is actually a little shy, certainly not the aggressive type. He is a contemplative person who is unafraid to talk about issues regarding life, and death. He is given a hard time by Eddie Adams and the other soldiers for reading his Bible all the time, which has earned him the nickname “Preacher Boy.” But as he says “I’m just trying to get some comfort in a place that’s not really comfortable. ” He is John Paul George’s father.
EDDIE ADAMS: MALE, 22-30 years old, CAUCASIAN. Eddie is a strong and brave soldier. He is the guy you can depend on to get the job done. In the midst of the war, Eddie finds it much easier to be the tough guy, keeping friendship at a distance, and his emotions hidden. He is known for his sense of humor, which is another way he keeps from dealing with the tougher issues he refuses to face. But sooner or later, he will have to face them, whether he wants to or not. He is Wayne Adams’ father.
SGT. MANSFIELD: MALE, 35-55 years old, CAUCASIAN. (THIS ACTOR WILL PLAY AN ON-SCREEN AGE RANGE OF 30 YEARS) He is very strong and solid physically, and extremely tough mentally. He is intelligent and a very good military officer, managing to balance compassion and concern for his soldiers with authoritative and concise leadership. His unit includes Eddie Adams and Steven George. After leaving the military, Sgt. Mansfield becomes a Virginia State Trooper.
CYNTHIA: FEMALE, 25 years old. CAUCASIAN. She is John’s fiancé; a beautiful blonde woman. Under normal circumstances Cynthia is a pleasant and enjoyable person to be around. But right now, although not quite a “bridezilla” , the stress of planning the wedding is taking its toll, adding tension to her relationship with John. She is not at all thrilled with John’s last minute decision to take a trip just three weeks before the day of their wedding.
“COWBOY” TED: MALE, 25-35 years old, CAUCASIAN. This rugged “good ol boy” seems pretty straightforward and honest, just a hitchhiker looking for a ride from Kentucky to New York City for him and his friend Annie. Although Annie tells us that she and Ted have only known each other for a few months and they are supposedly “just friends”, her “friendly” attention toward John and Wayne do not make this cowboy happy.
ANNIE: FEMALE, 22 – 25 years old, ANY ETHNICITY. Annie and “Cowboy” Ted are hitchhiking together to New York City. Annie is a beautiful woman and she knows how to use that to her advantage. She is witty, flirty and a little bit manipulative, but she makes it so enjoyable that you don’t really notice.
VIETNAM SOLDIERS: (6 – 8 principal roles): MALE, 20-35 years old, ANY ETHNICITY. These soldiers are a part of Sgt. Mansfield’s unit, fighting along side of Steven George and Eddie Adams in the Vietnam War.
DAN: MALE, 55 – 60 years old, AFRICAN AMERICAN. He is John’s co-worker. He never misses an opportunity to remind John that Cynthia has him wrapped around her finger when it comes to their wedding.
CO-WORKER: MALE, 30-35 years old, ANY ETHNICITY. He is John’s annoying co-worker. He is the “Dwight Schrute” of the post office.
LITTLE GIRL: FEMALE, 8 years old, CAUCASIAN. She is cute and seems innocent enough, but looks can be deceiving. She is quick-witted and very smart and has learned at a very young age how to “work the system”. She is reminiscent of a little Tatum O’Neal in PAPER MOON.
JULIA: FEMALE, 60-65 years old, CAUCASIAN. She is a “Flo” type waitress in a small town café.
MAGILL: MALE, 50-60 years old, ANY ETHNICITY. He is a fat/short order cook at the small town café.
OLD MAN: MALE, 70-80 years old, CAUCASIAN. He is a regular at the small town café always ready to offer his opinion whether you ask for it or not.
COUNTRY BOYS: (3-4 day player roles): MALE, 18-25 years old, CAUCASIAN. These guys are arrogant, cocky and looking for a fight.
DESK CLERK: MALE, 35-40 years old, CAUCASIAN. He has thick glasses and doesn’t look like he has much of a social life. He runs the front desk at a Holiday Inn in Kentucky.
MOTHER: FEMALE, 50-60 years old, CAUCASIAN. She is Cynthia’s mother, very involved with her daughter’s upcoming wedding.
POLICE OFFICERS / STATE TROOPERS: (2-3 dayplayer roles): MALE or FEMALE, 35-50 years old, ANY ETHNICITY. These are various members of law enforcement that John and Wayne meet on their road trip.
CHUCK: MALE, 45-55 years old. ANY ETHNICITY. Chuck runs the mini-market at a gas station.
