STORY LINE:

Volunteer Coordinators for opposing camps during the election of 2008, Aretha Gupta and KYLE FRANKLIN become romantically involved.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:

KYLE FRANKLIN
African American, in his late 20s to early 30s, great-looking and super-fit, Kyle is the Volunteer Coordinator for McCain headquarters in Atlantic Palms, Florida. Intelligent, driven, focused and hard-working, he is a lawyer with his own firm that specializes in family law, but is working over-time, hopefully helping his candidate win the election. Immediately attracted to Aretha, Volunteer Coordinator for the Obama election headquarters, Kyle is not about to let politics cloud the issue when it comes to romance. Initially rebuffed by Aretha, the tenacious and very charming Kyle soon wins the lady’s affections, but not without some fallout when one of his campaign workers seeks to use the secret affair to unsettle things in the political arena. SHIRLEE
African American, 55, pretty and plus-size, she is Aretha’s mother, a vivacious, energetic woman, who’s decided to leave her husband for some long overdue time to get in touch with the “real me.” She packs her bags and moves across town to live with her mother. She’s soon involved in the Obama election efforts, flattered when an aging hippie, also working on behalf of Obama, takes an interest in her. Galvanized by newfound friendships and a sense of purpose, Shirlee realizes how much she misses her husband and asks if she can come back home. LEAD

VIJAY
58, East Indian, nervous and whippet-thin, he is Aretha’s father, Shirlee’s despondent husband, clearly upset that his wife has suddenly decided to be an independent woman. The owner of an Indian restaurant, he is a hard-working, struggling restaurateur who rents out his back room to the Obama election campaign workers, even if he is a McCain supporter. Overwhelmed and pained with anxiety, he exclaims, “My restaurant has been invaded by lefties, my son is a bum, I have nonstop heartburn, and (my) wife won’t return (my) calls.” LEAD

MARVIN
Early to mid 20s, half East Indian, half African American (but looking more African American), he is Aretha’s brother, a wannabe filmmaker who still lives at home and makes deliveries for his father’s Indian restaurant. Dressed a bit faux gangsta, Marvin is a pessimist, a serial pot smoker with a lazy streak who hides his feelings beneath a veneer of jive-talk. Clearly pleased when Aretha asks him to shoot some footage for the campaign efforts, he steps up the plate, demonstrating real talent. He’s also attracted to one of the election workers, the fine by feisty Bianca. LEAD

CHELSEA
Mid 20s, pretty, Chelsea is Aretha’s best friend from high school, an outspoken livewire and self-professed women’s libber. Also a die-hard Democrat who wouldn’t give a Republican the time of day, she’s intrigued, although a bit befuddled by Aretha’s interest in Kyle. Not one to be needy especially when it comes to men, she falls hard for Terrence Miller, Organizer for the Obama election headquarters in Atlantic Palms, Florida. She later confides in Aretha that she’s pregnant, and that she’s decided to keep the baby. LEAD. PLEASE SUBMIT AFRICAN-AMERICAN.

TERRENCE MILLER
35, nice looking, in an academic way, he is the Organizer for the Obama election headquarters in Atlantic Palms, Florida. Easy-going, but clearly committed to the cause, he’s quick to see in Aretha a natural ability when it comes to organization. Impressed by her intuitive ideas about how to win votes, he offers her the job as Volunteer Coordinator. Delighted with her efforts, he’s understandably bummed and disheartened when a video surfaces showing her in a compromising position with Kyle Franklin, Volunteer Coordinator for the McCain election headquarters. CLARISSA JORDAN
Late 60s, African American and diminutive, she is Aretha’s outspoken, good-hearted, effusive grandmother. Energetic, the type of woman who speaks her mind, she’s soon involved in the efforts to help Obama win the election. Shes’ also soon involved with fellow campaign worker, Carlos. Seen moments after casting her vote on election day, an overcome Clarissa says that she can now die a happy woman. LEAD

BRENT MURPHY
40, Caucasian, husky, he is the Office Organizer for the McCain election headquarters in Atlantic Palms, Florida. Upbeat, driven, but a bit crass, he can’t help but oggle the lovely Aretha, eager to know if Kyle has scored with her yet. Later, Brent opts to take the low road when he decides to videotape Kyle and a very drunk Aretha out on a date. 9 speeches & 4 lines, 4 scenes

GLEN
62, an “old hippie agitator who lives in a trailer,” he is one of the election workers. He’s impressed by the energetic Shirlee, and the two become close friends. 1 speech & 9 lines, 6 scenes

BIANCA
Mid to late 20s, “well-assembled” and haughty, she is a hard-working election worker for the Obama camp, but teeming with attitude, and hardly a people person. She constantly rebuffs Marvin’s overtures, much to his confused irritation. 3 speeches & 4 lines, 5 scenes

IVY HENDERSON
Mid to late 40s, glamorous and grand, she is Aretha’s boss at the New York marketing firm where Aretha works. Gushy, but to the point, she explains to Aretha why she’s firing her, couching the whole thing in positive terms, urging the younger woman to do something “to change the world” so that she will have ammunition to hire her back. 4 speeches & 3 lines, 1 scene.
