Synopsis: James, a charming and ambitious teacher in a deaf school, meets a profoundly deaf young woman, Sarah, and takes on the formidable challenge of trying to teach her how to speak and lip-read. Sarah will have none of it, but in the course of their sparring, the two of them develop a chemistry, which blossoms into romance, and then marriage.
As their relationship grows, James becomes Sarah’s interpreter, expanding Sarah’s horizons, but finding himself relegated to a supporting role in her life. When Sarah files a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission about discriminatory hiring practices, James is deeply hurt by her allegations. His response escalates into a violent argument that culminates, devastatingly, with Sarah’s first spoken words. As James finally begins to understand Sarah’s point of view, the marriage dissolves.
