Story: Eclipsed, a gripping new play from Obie Award-winning actress and writer Danai Gurira, offers a compelling portrait of transformation and renewal. Set in 2003 during Liberia’s vicious civil war, ‘wives’ of a Rebel Commanding Officer form community in a hostile warzone; their world is transformed by the arrival of two new comers, and the unceremonious return of a former ‘wife’, turned rebel soldier. Each woman pursues her own means of survival, but at what cost? At once chilling, humanizing, and surprisingly funny, Eclipsed unearths the wreckage of war and celebrates-with wit, compassion, and defiance-the women who navigate and survive the most hostile of circumstances.
Casting:
All Actors need to be able to do a West African accent.

The Girl: African-American female, legal 18+ to play 15. A teenage girl from Kakata. Educated. Father was in the army. Displaced from her home by the war, the Girl is newly arrived to the LURD camp and forced to become wife # 4. In the latter half of the play becomes a soldier in an attempt to find her footing and survive within the war zone. Role requires actress with strong emotional range.
Helena: African-American female, mid-to-late 20s. Wife # 1 of the LURD C.O. Uneducated. Savvy and tough but maternal. In charge. Takes care of things. Knows how to successfully navigate the confines of her immediate world of the LURD camp. Has an unexpressed desire to educate/ advance herself.
Bessie: African-American female, legal 18+ to play late teens/20. Wife # 3 to LURD C.O. 6 1/2 months pregnant. Competitive and jealous. Stubborn. Funny. Immature. Self-absorbed and vain. The most fun-loving of the group.
Maima: African-American female, early-20s. Formerly wife # 2, now in the Rebel army. Tough, conniving, unscrupulous. Takes advantage of others in order to take care of herself. Enlists “the girl” into the army. Unapologetically resorts to violence to achieve her means.
Rita: African-American female, 40s. Upper-class, well-educated woman from the city. Formerly a successful businesswoman and war profiteer. Now a member of the Liberian Women’s Initiative. Struggling with her own classism and the loss of her daughter to the war.
