In the mode of TONY & TINA’S WEDDING…
BLAST FROM THE PAST is a very fast-paced, ironic, wickedly satirical take on America’s pop culture and social mores of the era of HAPPY DAYS and GREASE. It is a parody and an SNL-type farce for an audience of 350 – 400, so obviously the characters have to be filled with energy and larger than life.
The entire show takes place at an AMERICAN GRAFFITTI-type Sockhop therefore all characters will social dance ala 1950’s style… in character… between acts of the play. Actors will be taught dances but must already move well and with confidence.
ROLES AVAILABLE — ALL NEED A GOOD SENSE OF COMIC TIMING:
THE COP — Age 30 – 50. In the over-the-top style of Clark Gable… masculine, cynical, tough, comically hard-as-nails.
THE SCHOOL TEACHER — Age 30 – 50. Uptight, sexually-repressed matron obsessed with decorum.
THE SENATOR — Age 30 – 50. Reminiscent of Senator Joe McCarthy and Richard Nixon. Fiery crusader finding Communists hiding under every rock — real or imagined.
THE SOCIALITE — Age late 20’s – 30’s. Attractive. Part Audrey Hepburn/part Grace Kelly. The template for tasteful, sophisticated Reublican women of wealth. Firm believer in traditional societal roles for females.
THE BEATNIK HIPSTER — Age late 20’s – 30’s. An angst-ridden amalgamation of a young Marlon Brando and James Dean. Both bad poet and Method Actor.
THE TEENY-BOPPER — Age late teens – 20’s. Attractive ingenue.
THE SEX RESEARCHER — Age 30 – 50. An academic scientist type in the vein of Dr. Kinsey.
THE GANG MEMBER — Age late teens – 20’s. A hoodlum straight out of WEST SIDE STORY. Communicates threats through finger-snapping and pirouettes. Must pull off the dancing requirements in order to sell the satire of this character.
PRODUCTION DATES: 2 shows — Thursday evening December 31, 2009 and Saturday evening February 13, 2010. Omni Park West Hotel and Hyatt Regency North, Dallas, Texas.
REHEARSAL SCHEDULE: November 29 – December 13
[Sunday Afternoons, Monday - Wednesday evenings] + Technical Dress Rehearsal the evening of December 30 & Final Rehearsal the afternoon of December 31.
