Auditions for Anton Chekhov’s “The Cherry Orchard”

For the next show in their 40th season, the award-winning Theatre Company of Saugus will present The Cherry Orchard. This tragi-comedy is Anton Chekhov’s most popular play. A family faces foreclosure and the destruction of their beloved property for a housing subdivision. The old world of loyalty between aristocrats and servants is giving way to a new economic era of capitalism. In the meantime, several love affairs start, stop, resume, or languish.

Performances are scheduled for 5-8 March 2009 in Saugus, Massachusetts. This production will be directed by Larry Segel.

Auditions for The Cherry Orchard will be held on Sunday and Tuesday 14 & 16 December 2008, with callbacks on Thursday 18 December 2008, all starting at 7:30 PM. The audition location is the Cliftondale Congregational Church, 50 Essex Street, Saugus, Mass.

All roles are open. There are five women: Liubov Ranevskaya, around 50 years old; Anya, 17; Varya, 24; Carlotta, 30s; and Dunyasha, early 20s.

There are seven men: Lopakhin, late 40s; Leonid Gayev, about 50; Petya Trofimov, mid 20s; Boris Semyonov-Pishchik, 50s or 60s; Yepikhodov, 20s; Firs, 87; and Yasha, 20s or 30s.

There are also three small roles: Tramp, Stationmaster, Postmaster.

Those auditioning may optionally prepare a two-minute dramatic or comic monologue. They will also be asked to read monologues and scenes from the play. The Theatre Company of Saugus (TCS) is in its 40th season. A previous production, The Marriage of Bette and Boo, by Christopher Durang, was nominated for ten awards at the 2007 EMACT Festival, and was the winner of three awards, including Best Supporting Actor, Scenic Design, and Risk Taking. Other recent productions include The Crucible, Pirates of Penzance, From Broadway to Hollywood (a musical revue), From Moliere With Love (The Imaginary Cuckold and The Forced Marriage), Sabrina Fair, Fiddler on the Roof, Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged), Iphigenia in Aulis by Euripides, and The Man Who Came to Dinner.
