19 y/o female lead – dark comedy – Harvard thesis film (Cambridge, MA)
Seeking talent for Harvard undergrad thesis film, tentatively titled ASHLEY/AMBER. The film is a dark comedy about an anti-war activist who finds fame only after she is outed as the one-time star of an internet porn video. It will be shot in 16mm, estimated length 25min. Production will take place over 8 days in January 2010.
SYNOPSIS:
19 year old Ashley is traumatized over the loss of her boyfriend Phil, a military casualty of the United States’ latest overseas invasion. She lives with two guys, Phil’s best friends, the three of them brought together in shared mourning. But this bond is interrupted after Ashley stars in a video for a “barely legal” porn site. Though they all try to act like it isn’t a big deal, they soon forget how to talk to each other.
Ashley finds female companionship in her co-worker Winona, a wealthy vegan who lives in a student cooperative house. Soon after she is visited by Dan, a friend of Phil’s from the army who is on a brief military leave. To Ashley’s horror, he recognizes her as the star of one of his favorite pornos. But Ashley forgets her embarrassment as she listens to Dan speak first-hand of the horrors of the war. Resolved to take action, Ashley asks Winona to put her in contact with the peace group at the co-op.
Ashley gives an incredibly moving, personal, and angry speech at an anti-war rally, which unfortunately is attended only by its organizers. The speech is posted online and Ashley sends the link to Dan. Excited, Dan sends all of his friends in the army an email with the subject “Porn Star Speaks Out Against the War” and a link to both videos. Fueled by fury and fascination, the story soon goes viral. Now Ashley must reconcile her loss in the midst of her 15 minutes of fame.
DESCRIPTION OF CHARACTERS:
Ashley
19 y/o white female. Conventionally attractive appearance masks a complicated inner life. Enjoyed a mostly carefree until the death of her soldier boyfriend, Phil. Numbness (catalyzed by a need to pay the rent) leads her to star in a pornographic film. Takes up anti-war activism as a way to seek closure and re-claim her identity.
Phil
21 y/o white male. Clean-cut, physically fit. Ashley’s dead boyfriend. His ghost haunts her dreams.
Dan
25 y/o male. Intense, physically fit. Phil’s buddy from the army. Visits Ashley between tours of duty to give her a gift from Phil, and recognizes her from her porno. Completely disenchanted with the war and encourages Ashley to speak out against it.
