Casting Call for UT Austin Student “The Graduate” Scene Project – Austin, TX

Casting Call Details:
‘The Graduate’ – Undergraduate scene re-interpretation for Director’s Workshop.

3-5 minutes long, presented in front of a Director’s Workshop class.

The Story:
Benjamin, recently graduated from college in the 1960’s, returns home to his parents’ house, unsure of his future. One night, he is asked to drive Mrs. Robinson, a family friend, home from a party. She invites him inside for a drink, and when they arrive she proceeds to attempt and seduce him. Shocked and unnerved, Benjamin tries his best to be polite and leave quickly. It doesn’t work.

The Characters:

MRS. ROBINSON, female, 40-50s, any ethnicity
-Mrs. Robinson (played by Anne Bancroft) is a woman beginning to realize that her ‘good ol days’ are over. Lacking proper affection from her husband, she drinks, smokes, wears fine clothes, and tries to charm Benjamin into sex. She is stir-crazy and calculating, a bad combination for an attractive older woman and an even worse combination for a testosterone-driven young man to fight against.

BENJAMIN, male, 20s, any ethnicity
-Benjamin (played by Dustin Hoffman) is a young man trying to make sense of himself amidst the pressures and worries of adulthood. He is a good guy, mild mannered and polite, and would much rather lay sun bathing in his parents’ pool contemplating life’s meaning at this crossroads of his life than spend the afternoon in job interviews with a suit on, kissing ass.

Rehearsal will take place during the weeks of February 18-22th and 25-29th.
Performance date is Tuesday, March 5th.

PAY: Credit, food, and a possible scene shoot. My thought on this is that most people want a hard copy of their work, and even though we will have a stationary master set up for the in-class performance, if we get working on it and having fun and everyone is up for it, I’d be more than willing to shoot the scene outside of class as well, with all new blocking and cinematography (as these elements of the scene will be hashed out regardless).

Auditions will be held Tuesday, February 19th, from 7:30-9 pm, on the UT Austin Campus in building CMA, Room 3.116

It’s a fun scene with a great dynamic and lots of leeway for both actor and director, and I am looking forward to reworking this iconic seduction scene.
